Simple Changes Dramatically Improve Recycling Rates
A lean six-sigma project at the PepsiCo site in Riviera Beach, Florida revealed that much of the unsaleable product that previously totaled one full 40-yard compactor per week could be reworked or recovered, and that the recyclable beverage containers could easily be diverted from landfill. Furthermore, a few easy steps could help garner maximum recovery value from the recyclable materials. Leading the zero landfill efforts, Simon Rosasco and his team implemented the new strategy which includes a revised gate procedure for drivers as well as improved segregation processes to increase recycling revenue.
Previously, incoming product was matched with a handheld scanner, but there was no process in place for proper product segregation. Now a part-time "checker" near the gate area segregates the product by container type and arranges for the swap out of full bins of product for empty ones. The product that cannot be reworked is segregated by beverage container type for recycling. Segregation assures that maximum value is received for the containers. To further enhance recycling revenue, aluminum is compacted to minimize transportation costs.
These changes not only allow Riviera Beach to increase recycling revenue, they also maximize the amount of saleable product that can be reworked and sold. The success of this program relies on the individual efforts of drivers, the checker, and support staff who everyday incorporate these simple changes that help the site operate more sustainably. Riviera Beach has greatly reduced its compactor disposal rate from one full compactor every week to just one every five to six weeks—a huge improvement!
