Debris that is regulated as hazardous must be specially treated to prevent leaching prior to being buried in landfills. In the mid-1990s, Waste Management pioneered enhanced disposal technologies with its patented Macro Secure™ and Micro Secure™ processes. Today, these systems remain the gold standard for ensuring hazardous materials containment and landfill integrity.
Macro Secure™
Macro Secure™ is Waste Management’s patented macroencapulsation system for securing hazardous debris capable of fitting inside a 20-cubic-yard roll-off box. It provides a safe and cost-effective method for permanently disposing of larger pieces of hazardous debris that cannot be rendered easily inert by other techniques.
The Macro Secure™ one-piece container made from high-strength HDPE specially formulated to resist contaminants and leachate. The hazardous debris is first placed inside the Macro Secure™ container. A pozzolanic, flowable solid material such as fly ash or cement kiln dust is then added to the debris to fill any remaining voids inside the unit. The lid is then welded shut, creating a permanent, impermeable barrier between the waste debris and the outside world. Finally, the unit is placed in one of Waste Management's specially permitted Subtitle C landfills for permanent disposal. Macro Secure™ conforms to all federal guidelines for long-term hazardous waste debris disposal.
Micro Secure™Waste Management developed Micro Secure™ microencapsulation technology to treat smaller-sized hazardous debris. Micro Secure™ involves coating hazardous debris with a custom-tailored mixture of proprietary sealing agents, thus preventing them from interacting chemically with the surrounding environment. Micro Secure™ is the preferred treatment for smaller-sized hazardous debris that can be fully coated on all surfaces, both exterior and interior.
Waste Management's Micro Secure™ process confirms to all federal guidelines for long-term hazardous waste disposal. It is the safest, most cost-effective method for disposing of smaller-sized objects containing hazardous contaminants.
Debris Management
Debris ruled hazardous by RCRA that is larger than 60 millimeters in diameter (“the size of a tennis ball”) can receive safe and secure permanent disposal in any of Waste Management’s Subtitle "C" Landfills. To secure such wastes, Waste Management may use its patented MacroSecureTM macroencapsulation technology or other techniques available as these facilities.
Convenient to most areas of the Continental United States, our principal sites handling hazardous debris are:
